Holidays Aren’t Easy for Everyone – Ways to Help Others or Yourself
The holidays can be a difficult time of year for many people, whether it’s due to the loss of a loved one, financial stress, or simply being without family or traditions. These circumstances can stir up feelings of sadness or loneliness.

If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone and there are ways to reconnect, start your own meaningful experiences, or simply spread a little holiday cheer.
I’ve experienced the holiday blues myself on many occasions, and I’ve found that doing things that felt special or meaningful, even in small ways, helped me find a sense of peace during the season.
For me, one of my favorite traditions is decorating the house with a Christmas tree and lots of lights, then cozying up to watch Hallmark Christmas movies starting the moment they air, which is usually right around Halloween.
Other activities that helped me feel more connected to the season include:
- Shopping and donating to Toys for Tots
- Participating in Samaritan’s Purse (shoebox outreach)
- Volunteering to pack meal boxes for families in need
- Donating food or supplies to local animal shelters
Doing something for others, even from afar, can bring a powerful sense of connection and purpose.
